Scammers are becoming increasingly convincing, and sometimes their best tool isn’t sophisticated technology…it’s pretending to be someone you trust.
Fraudsters may pose as Southern Energy Credit Union or another trusted organization through a phone call, text or email. They often even create a sense of urgency by telling you there’s suspicious activity on your account and that you need to act immediately.
Knowing what your Credit Union will and won’t ask you for can help you recognize a scam quickly and confidently before you respond.
Southern Energy Credit Union will never call, text or email you asking for your personal or account information, Digital Banking credentials, or a verification code to confirm a transaction. We will also never ask for your card PIN or the three-digit security code on the back of your card.
If someone contacts you claiming to be from Southern Energy and asks for this information, don’t provide it.
Scammers can make a phone call appear to come from a familiar or legitimate number. If someone contacts you about your account or card and you’re uncertain whether the call is legitimate, hang up and call us directly at 1-800-249-2726.
Don’t rely on the number provided by the caller. Contacting us directly gives you the opportunity to verify what’s happening before providing information or taking action.
Be cautious of unexpected text messages that include links, particularly those warning about suspicious account or card activity or those with website addresses you’re unfamiliar with.
A legitimate Southern Energy text alert about suspicious activity on your Visa® card will never include a link to click. Instead, the message will provide information about the transaction and ask you to respond with options such as “yes,” “no,” “help” or “stop.”
A scammer may tell you that your card has been compromised, needs to be blocked or must be replaced. They may then ask for your PIN, card security code (3-digit security code on the back of your card) or a verification code sent to your phone to supposedly “secure” your account.
Don’t provide it. These pieces of information can give a fraudster what they need to access your account or complete a transaction.
Scammers often rely on urgency to get you to act before you have time to question what’s happening. If something doesn’t feel right, stop the conversation and contact Southern Energy directly.
You can also log in to Digital Banking to review your accounts for transactions you don’t recognize. If you see suspicious activity or are concerned about a call, text or email you’ve received, contact us at 1-800-249-2726.
When it comes to protecting your accounts, taking a moment to stop and verify can make all the difference.
Sometimes a scammer’s best tool isn’t sophisticated technology…it’s pretending to be someone you trust. Knowing what your Credit Union will and won’t ask you for can help you recognize a scam quickly and confidently before you respond.
